Numis Network Silver Coin of The Month: Feb 2012 Koala

Silver Koala 2012

Who can resist the endearing and lovable Australian Koala? With a design that changes yearly, it is easy to understand why the Silver Koala is a favorite among collectors, both young and old alike.

Enjoying its sixth year in production, the Australian Silver Koala was first introduced by the Perth Mint in 2007.

The obverse design of the coin, which remains constant, portrays the crowned profile of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England. Surrounding Ian Rank-Broadley’s iconic image of the Queen are the inscriptions ‘Elizabeth II,’ ‘Australia,’ and the coin’s ‘1 Dollar’ denomination.

For 2012, the reverse image was designed by Perth Mint artist Aleysha Howarth and depicts our cuddly marsupial sleeping on the branch of a eucalyptus tree with its forelimbs dangling off the sides. Primarily a nocturnal creature, the koala is inactive or sleeping for up to 20 hours a day.

Minted in one troy ounce of .999 Fine Silver and graded MS70 by ANACS, the 2012 Australian Silver Koala is minted in a stunning ‘reverse-proof’ finish, which is the opposite of US proof coins. The background of the coin is frosted while the images themselves are rendered in a dazzling mirror-like finish, allowing them to catch the light beautifully. These highly sought-after coins are part of an extremely limited mintage from the prestigious Perth Mint and are sure to become an excellent addition to your collection.

Weight: 31.135g            Diameter: 40.6mm

Thickness: 4.0mm      Composition: 99.9% Fine Silver

A Little Info about the “UN-BEAR-ABLE” Bear

Though often called the koala bear, this gentle creature is not a bear at all. Koalas, like their neighbors the kangaroos, are marsupials and have a pouch. Newborn koalas, are called joeys and spend up to 7 months in their mother’s pouch continuing to develop.

They are found almost exclusively on the eastern and southern coasts of Australia, and nowhere else except for zoos.

Koalas live on a diet composed almost entirely of eucalyptus leaves which are toxic to most animals. This steady diet of highly indigestible, low protein eucalyptus leaves results in an extremely low metabolic rate and explains why the koala is active for only a few hours a day and spends much of its time napping or resting.

That’s a VERY Cool Coin!

Numis is an exciting business and seems to be very different then most companies out there. Do I have to limit myself to just one coin a month?

@TerryPetrovick Very cool indeed Terry. And, No, absolutely not. The sky is the limit here with Numis. You can get as many as you want. Another really cool thing is when you get 3 customers who each purchase The Coin of The Month, you get your coin FREE. What a company!

@valheisey Yes, what a product. One that I can actually be proud to talk to people about and know that if I choose, I can still have them in ten years time and they will actually probably have increased in value.

Interesting post, Alan! I’ve never collected any kind of coins. Actually, I’m not much of a collector of anything. I’m usually giving things away. :) But times like these make one examine one’s habits. So I’m going to look more into this. Thanks for sharing!

@AskSage I think I have always collected something throughout my life. I think it was stamps to begin with but I prefer coins, much shinier!
